A surprisingly accurate sun-dial!
My P.S skills are limited and I would like some advice on editing to make it more than a record shot please

Difficult - it is a good record, but you really need some dramatic lighting to make it something else. You could crop this much tighter to the blade and shadow, but better would have been a more dramatic viewpoint with, say extreme wide angle, when shooting.

The modern ones have luminous paint on the numbers so that you can tell the time at night.

Its a nice **** with some interesting textures. Lots you can do with this shot so I have uploaded some mods. Unfortunately the comments that went with them did not load so if you want details just message me.

The stars are meant to say 'image'.

Thanks for the comments and ideas - I particularly like the mod made to look like a painting. I couldn't work out the stars /image ref LynneJoyce?

"More than a record" is something that really needs to be put in when you're shooting. If you take a matter-of-fact photo like this, it's very rare to be able to edit excitement into it, unless you have fabulous artistic talent and can use it as some component of a collage or digital artwork.

Think about what viewpoint to use, what height to shoot from, what depth of field to use (though there's not much flexibility with a small sensor and a lens that only opens to f/3.5). Look for interesting shapes, for interesting bits of detail to zoom in on. And take the record shot, too, in case all the fancy ideas come to naught. Wink

By the way, this is another one that's been over-sharpened. There's a noticeable halo down the left edge of the gnomon, particularly on the second curve from the top. It also looks like there's a substantial halo on the upper part of the straight edge and around the uppermost curve on the top, but that might just be the patina on the dial.

Dave.

P.S. I think the 'stars/image' reference is to Lynne's rather spectacular typo for 'shot'; stars as in 's***'.)
