This is a 22 degree halo above the old lighthouse tower at Isle of Whithorn in Dumfries and Galloway. The halo, you'll not be surprised to know, is caused by ice crystals in the high cloud. They are not that uncommon but I don't think I've seen one as well defined before.

This did not last long and I blasted off three exposures at high speed so that I could do an HDR merge (I didn't want to risk losing the image by setting up the tripod). Very slight misalignment was quite easy to fix.

I'm going to have a rummage around the forum later (yey!) as I'm off sick and finally have some time to spend on epz (for a wee while, at least).

Thanks for looking.

Highly unusual phenomenon Fraser, never seen it before. Hope you're not too ill to manage a wee whizz around the site. Don't go rushing back too soon and passing on any germs now.

Dougie

I have never witnessed this atmospheric event either, Fraser: so well displayed in this image.
All the best and hope you're recovered soon.
Ronnie.

Don't think I've ever seen the full circle like this but I've seen the upper half before (probably as the sun was fairly low to display the full circle maybe?).

Often see sundogs, or parhelia, which are the rainbow effects at the left and right quadrant of the full circle.

Great natural phenomenon and nicely photographed too.

Chris

natural shot and not faked......must be a sellable photograph sir !
