And now for something completely different! I’ve never been to a race meeting before, let alone photographed horses galloping, so this was something new to me. We had a Camera Club competition recently and had to photograph different locations, and Pontefract Racecourse was one of them. Now, I find things that won’t or don’t keep still a struggle to photograph, so this was a bit of a challenge. After quickly learning that my camera will shoot continuously and maintain its focus whilst panning, I did in the end get a few reasonable images – even with horses in the frame! The trick is getting the shutter speed right, to freeze the horses, yet show movement in the legs. Think I might stick to static subjects, though! Thought the subject suited a bit of jiggery-pokery in Photoshop.
Looks a little better seen large if you have the time...
Original image shot at:
1/80 sec, F10, 55mm, ISO 200
Single Raw image processed in Adobe Camera Raw, lots of tweaking in Elements 6...and a little Topaz Adjust.
Thanks again to everyone for your votes & comments on my previous uploads.

wonderful out of bound effect, i should give my vote to this but care for the shadow too.
now I am sure you will appreciate how hard it can be to photograph birds but love your shot with the out of the frame effect and it works very well
Wonderful image, like the bit of jiggery-pokery in Photoshop, very clever.
Wow Trev! This is excellent! A super shot to start with, and your very clever manipulation has worked wonders! Very well done indeed, I love it!

I'm surprised you have not done this sort of photography before, simply because it's so good. The out-of-frame technique suits it perfectly and is extremely well done, I like it very much, it's different and interesting.
A very clever presentation & well thought out, you have captured a moving target well

A very nice piece of jiggery pokery in Photoshop it is too - one of my favourite sports is horseracing (a like a little flutter too!!) I like this very much I am off to catch up on your piccies uploaded over the past couple of weeks now I am sure I will find many more excellent shots - Elizabeth
Very clever. The panning looks to have been just right, as is the shutter speed and the post processing. Well done.
Wow - now THIS is great work and an excellent first attempt at a moving subject - if you stare at it long enough it seems as though there's actually movement happening ! Absolutely brilliant Trev and the presentation is spot on - well worthy of my "half-ton" vote - ( although I'm a little jealous as I haven't had one of those yet ! ) Congratulations ![]()
