I was surprised not to be shot more times on my last upload Durham Cathedral over looking the river Weir, This is the last in that series, it has been an insight to how people see colour and B/W, at times it can change the shot completely showing much more detail in b/w. Many thanks to everyone who took part with votes/comments.

Super images, looks more dramatic in B/W.

Well . . . . . I don't know which I like the best, to be honest I like both of them, I can't decide between the two! Grin

I think colour is quicker to attract an emotional response while the b&w demands more time for us to assemble our thoughts, that extra time allowing us to notice more detail.
That is not meant to be a definitive answer, nor does it hold for all kinds of photographic subject; it just seems to apply here. As you know, I was at Durham University and go to Durham half a dozen times every year: I love the place. To my way of thinking V2 appeals to the heart, V1 to the intellect.
Sorry I can only give you one half vote each Smile

Bill

V1 for me. I've been thinking a lot about b&w recently.
Did you follow the Landscape Photographer of the Year shenanigans? There was a very interesting comment in Amateur Photographer - the Editor Damien Demolder, discussing what is considered acceptable and what isn't, commented that the disqualified picture with its replacement sky 'was obviously a manipulation, unless David Byrne really did find a black & white beach. How much more of a manipulation of the truth can you get than the removal of that which everyone could have seen – colour?'
That stopped me in my tracks. No, I don't see things primarily in colour, black and white seems a perfectly natural way to 'see' to me; maybe it's because our generation grew up in a mono world? Anyway it concentrates on the the things that matter, the elements that I would remember.

Another difficult choice to make and my preference keeps swerving from one to another, John: interesting to read the above comments too.
Each appeals on a different level, so this time I am copping out, sitting on the fence and feel either could occupy the V 1 slot.....so 1/2 vote to each.
Ronnie.

Some thought provoking comments here.
My first reaction was to choose the colour version but now I am not so sure; thus proving the point made by Bill.
I like both but if I had to choose I would pick the B&W - it seems to suit the subject.

This time John it's V1. mono brings out the tones wonderfully well, and accentuates the street lights which I feel you have not got with colour, regards Leon.GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

A fantastic image John. I like the mono image but feel that the colour version has the edge on this occasion

Another cracking capture, John, and a very fine mono. However, I do prefer evening / night images in colour, so today the colour wins for me Wink

During the daylight I would go for the mono on this, John, focussing on the shapes and structures, but as a low-light capture the mono loses that wonderful light on the Cathedral and the warm brown surrounding and contrasting tones.

Well, interesting to see the diversity of opinion. It has given me food for thought. So, looking at your picture "from the heart", I favour the colour version in this instance.

I go along with Moira's comments. I too grew up with Pot Black in b&w and had to learn to see the different nuances in the shades of grey in order to identify the various colours and all the reds. Such things make you appreciate studying b&w images, and you do spend more time looking at them than colour images. I do anyway.

I favour colour too John - I think Dave summed it up when he said that colour works better in the low-light.

They are just different images but I do agree that sometimes the B&W beings out details that one doesn't otherwise see and I think this is one of those occasions - its v1 for me
