Inspired by some of the wonderful close-up macro images here on EPZ, I splashed out and bought a macro lens a couple of weeks back. The following day, 1st November, was a beautiful sunny and very mild day, so set off to the park with camera and new lens, to capture both some of the autumn colours and some close-ups. Alongside the rose gardens there, where the roses were still blooming, is a hothouse with lots of cacti and other tropical plants. I soon found out that this macro business isn’t the easiest style of photography, especially in a confined space and without a tripod, but this was one of my better captures. I’ve no idea what species of cactus it is, but the flower heads were only about an inch long.
Update: apparently it's an echeveria - thanks for that info, Carol ![]()

Thanks again to everyone for your votes & comments on my previous uploads, it really is appreciated and encouraging.

A lovely close up Trev - macro is just amazing isn't it - and that is a lovely lens you have there
So, looking forward to lots more! Did you use a tripod - I am useless at macro without a tripod![]()
Thank you so much for your support and kindness - you know I appreciate it very much.
Hi Trev, superb job with your new lens, they take some getting used to, have to use a tripod because my macro lens is so heavy and normaly in low light. I use the Wimberley Plamp to hold different backgrounds and also the keep unwanted things out of shot, it is like a third hand.
Regards
Trev.
This is a cracker, Trev, especially for a first attempt. Nicely composed and detailed; I like the top left flower getting ahead of its siblings.
I've just sold my macro lens . . .
Regards
Bill
Great subject Trev, well taken with your new lens.
I like the subtle red making a very attractive image

Congrats. on the new lens, Trev: we will be looking for lots of great close-ups now, but for starters this one is pretty brill if I can put it that way. I think I too must invest in a a macro lens one day, but other things have taken priority of recent.
Keep up the good work, my friend.
Ronnie.
Last of the big spenders, eh Trev?![]()
