Despite it being pouring with rain when we woke up this morning, we decided to take our chances and head over to Kenilworth castle for the day. Glad we did as it remained dry all day there and there where some good photo opportunities.
These guys gave a good show and there was no balsa wood being used here.
Not a perfect shot, but the best impact I managed to capture. Go large for splinters and grimace.
As always, thanks for looking.
Neil
EDIT: A bit after the fact, but I have added a second shot in the versions.

well i think it's an excellent shot...!
be very pleased if i'd taken it anyway ![]()
They do this at the Cite in Carcassonne. Looks like it might be worth a visit. Nice shot.
Malcolm
Thanks for your comments Jo, Malcolm.
I think it would be worth the visit Malcolm.

typical EPZ - a non-standard shot (i.e. no feathers or moody sky) getting no attention whatsoever!
To me, this shows just how dangerious a sport this was - those lances are proper wood and to capture the moment when the things splinter conveys the sense of danger very vividly.
I've seen many suits of armour in teh Amouries in Leeds and often thought they were a little over the top, they must weigh more than teh wearer!! But here you see why
Improvements... it's an action shot, we're not after perfect composition, it's captured everything it needs in the frame so be happy leave well alone!

Great photo, looks like a fun place. Love how you caught the impact.Missed this yesterday but saw it as i commented on your upload from today and i tend to click/comment someones photo then have a nosey at their other stuff and im glad i did ![]()
Thanks Ron, Ade, Michelle.
No great surprise Ade. I am very happy with it, but a shame that more people have not viewed it.
Neil
I think Ade's pretty much summed it up Neil. You tread a lonely path through EPZ land, far from the main road at times. Nowt wrong with this at all though, colourful and full of action showing good timing to capture the splintered lance. On an aesthetic level I'd crop out those small bits of flying wood just for neatness sake.
Thanks Una, Dave.
Not sure about cropping it down any further Dave as I quite like the splinters. I have another shot which is closer in, which may make an appearance if my confidence can take the knock of another low performer ![]()
Thanks
Neil
Oops ... I actually meant clone out Neil. The crop is fine by me. It's just those little pale specks of flying wood that look "messy".
They are all part of the action though Dave
If not for those the armour would have eye slits they could actually see through.
Thanks Roy, David.
Having seen them suit up I think they are fairly well protected, but I guess knowing you can walk away from your car after a 30 mph crash does not mean you want it to happen.
The helmet it is fixed to the chest and back plates so that any impact to the head is distributed to the chest and damped by the torso being pushed back. The shield is also bolted to the chest plate and has a pad on the back to reduce any collision with the helmet.
They can just about see out of the slit when they tilt their heads forward, but as they approach the point where they hit, they lean back so visibility is zero and no splinters can enter the helmet.
Not something I would want to try anyway!
Thanks
Neil
