Dunno............
Perhaps it just needed the polariser, some nice fg detail though Maddie..
Nice shot, worthy of many clicks, sorry not qualified to answer question, waiting to get my own filters to stop doing the same.
to be honest I dont think it spoils the beautiful shot. I know what you mean though. There is an easy way of fixing this.
I have taken about 40 seconds to do it. I have uploaded my version. Remember it took no time at all. so spend a little time and you would never know. I doubt even with my speedy go people would not know

Yep, gets my vote too. When I use NG grads I take a meter reading in Av mode with the aperture set to the value I intend using - say f/16 or f/22. I then change to manual mode and dial in the exposure values I obtained in the Av mode. Finally I fit the ND grad using the depth-of-field preview button to gauge the best position for the filter. It's VERY important not take a meter reading with the ND grad fitted or else the cameras meter will give a false reading. Hope this helps.
Hard to restore heavily blown out parts but shane di a great wotk

Very nice shot. As is the green really take center stage, with a polarizer I would guess the sky might even overppower the land. It all comes down to the story you are trying to tell. Are you telling us about the sunset and cloud formation, or the beauty of the rocks and greenery? Could be there is nothing "broken".
A little burn out is acceptable to me as well. However, I've given a mod a go with an explanation of how it was done. Hope it is helpful to you Maddie. ![]()
I think it looks fabulous.
A bright highlight can really lift an image and give it sparkle.
Simon
Doesn't look like you were too far out Maddie. I like the composition, but wonder if you experimented further round to the right?
Stuarts advice seems pretty good to me ![]()
thanks all, i took some lovely shots, but the patch of sky ruined them all.
At one point i climbed on to the ledge on the left and took some shots, a bit scary when i stood back up again! lol
Great shot Maddie, I've had a go but I like your's better, excellent composition and colours.
Jason
It really looks good as it is. Excellent composition to this.
There is a way to add a digital polariser effect in photoshop(or any other software)
It works on some but not all images.
Select the sky and feather it at about 25-30.
Go into enhance and then colour. Go into hue/saturation and try this.
hue +7
saturation +34
Lightness -10
Worth a try.
ps, play with the sliders to get a different effect if it works/or required
regards
Ken
ps, 2 you may have already tried this, if so just ignore me!
wow,cracking texture,dof,colour/tone,perspective and lighting.Exceptional composition.Take care.Ann![]()
Beautiful as ever, Maddie...........
Ive been struggling with the same problem for 20 years........ : )
Jouko
Looks so good large Maddie. I dont think the sky spoils the shot at all.
Brian.
I think it looks just fine in spite of the sky, Maddie. You could try reworking the RAW file, but if there's no detail in the sky then that's it - no amount of manipulation will get something that's not there in the first place.
Jim
thanks again for more advice lol Jasbe, thanks for trying.
Franken i didnt know this way, im not sure if the polariser would have made i a difference or not, just know i forgot to put it on.
Jouko i cant see any similar problems to your pictures lol so spill the beans!
you always manage to get a good angle on your shots, this is no exception.. brilliant

There's a lot of good detail in the shot Maddie, lots of different ways to try and compose it for bright light, to me this image looks as though its been metered more for the foreground than the sky ![]()
thanks all for the mods, Jasbe, sorry when i said thanks for trying i didnt realise you had posted it! lol
Plenty been said but at the end its a excelent image well taken
Brian.....
Don't know how far down you had the grad. maybe not far enough. You can usualy lighten shots and bring out the detail but if they're burnt out the detail has gone.
Try sliding the grad filter further down in the holder and then select the land in PS and use levels to bring it back
Malcolm
Looks good to me also. Looks very natural even though it is a little blown out.

Hi Maddie, I see you've already had some post-processing suggestions and all put a little more oomph into the main body of cloud. I'm not an expert in this but I guess for that area on the horizon it would be a case of simply using a stronger ND grad. Happy to be corrected by anyone who knows for sure rather than trying to remember physics from a while back. Nick.
A lovely shot Maddie, nicely composed, looks great when viewed large.
Pete.
I read somewhere that if you don't quite know what to do to bring the sky out, meter off the sky, step down to give yourself options in PS and shoot - it seems to work. Don't know if this is the kind of advice you want and don't really know what I'm talking about, it seems to work for me!
Nicely done, great portfolio - doesn't look like you need much advice at all!
Regards,
Jan
Haven't got a clue with the PS stuff Maddie.......! Like the shot though ![]()
Debbie
Nice view, Madeleine, but there is no much dept in it. I use Picasa.com (free from Google) and give it a bit "shadow". It makes the picture stronger.
Jan
ps Just opened the large version. Looks much better. (as always.)
Missed this yesterday.
Like the composition and the sky
Nice one
Dave
A great shot, Maddie, but I know what it's like when you home in on one area and are not happy with it. It gnaws away at you. This has been interesting to read what others have said, so thanks for that.
WOW, stunning shot. Why would you want to change anything about it?
Karen
I'm sorry,I can't offer any advice here Maddie,I've not done too much with landscapes yet.I can however appreciate the help you have had here, good result!
I do like the composition with the view through the gap, maybe ther is another opportunity a little closer, using the rocks as a natural frame.
Janet
lol janet, do you want me to go over the edge, believe mee its high, hayleys got a pic of me on the end of the left ledge!!
A beautiful shot! I think Shane has done the best mod and still kept the picture true. Beautiful place!
