to be honest I dont think it spoils the beautiful shot. I know what you mean though. There is an easy way of fixing this.
I have taken about 40 seconds to do it. I have uploaded my version. Remember it took no time at all. so spend a little time and you would never know. I doubt even with my speedy go people would not know

Yep, gets my vote too. When I use NG grads I take a meter reading in Av mode with the aperture set to the value I intend using - say f/16 or f/22. I then change to manual mode and dial in the exposure values I obtained in the Av mode. Finally I fit the ND grad using the depth-of-field preview button to gauge the best position for the filter. It's VERY important not take a meter reading with the ND grad fitted or else the cameras meter will give a false reading. Hope this helps.

Very nice shot. As is the green really take center stage, with a polarizer I would guess the sky might even overppower the land. It all comes down to the story you are trying to tell. Are you telling us about the sunset and cloud formation, or the beauty of the rocks and greenery? Could be there is nothing "broken".

A little burn out is acceptable to me as well. However, I've given a mod a go with an explanation of how it was done. Hope it is helpful to you Maddie. Smile

Doesn't look like you were too far out Maddie. I like the composition, but wonder if you experimented further round to the right?

Stuarts advice seems pretty good to me Smile

thanks all, i took some lovely shots, but the patch of sky ruined them all.
At one point i climbed on to the ledge on the left and took some shots, a bit scary when i stood back up again! lol

It really looks good as it is. Excellent composition to this.

There is a way to add a digital polariser effect in photoshop(or any other software)

It works on some but not all images.

Select the sky and feather it at about 25-30.
Go into enhance and then colour. Go into hue/saturation and try this.

hue +7
saturation +34
Lightness -10

Worth a try.
ps, play with the sliders to get a different effect if it works/or required

regards
Ken

ps, 2 you may have already tried this, if so just ignore me!

I think it looks just fine in spite of the sky, Maddie. You could try reworking the RAW file, but if there's no detail in the sky then that's it - no amount of manipulation will get something that's not there in the first place.

There's a lot of good detail in the shot Maddie, lots of different ways to try and compose it for bright light, to me this image looks as though its been metered more for the foreground than the sky Smile

Don't know how far down you had the grad. maybe not far enough. You can usualy lighten shots and bring out the detail but if they're burnt out the detail has gone.

Try sliding the grad filter further down in the holder and then select the land in PS and use levels to bring it back

Hi Maddie, I see you've already had some post-processing suggestions and all put a little more oomph into the main body of cloud. I'm not an expert in this but I guess for that area on the horizon it would be a case of simply using a stronger ND grad. Happy to be corrected by anyone who knows for sure rather than trying to remember physics from a while back. Nick.

I read somewhere that if you don't quite know what to do to bring the sky out, meter off the sky, step down to give yourself options in PS and shoot - it seems to work. Don't know if this is the kind of advice you want and don't really know what I'm talking about, it seems to work for me!
Nicely done, great portfolio - doesn't look like you need much advice at all!

Nice view, Madeleine, but there is no much dept in it. I use Picasa.com (free from Google) and give it a bit "shadow". It makes the picture stronger.

A great shot, Maddie, but I know what it's like when you home in on one area and are not happy with it. It gnaws away at you. This has been interesting to read what others have said, so thanks for that.

I'm sorry,I can't offer any advice here Maddie,I've not done too much with landscapes yet.I can however appreciate the help you have had here, good result!
I do like the composition with the view through the gap, maybe ther is another opportunity a little closer, using the rocks as a natural frame.
