I'm just playing around with a ring-flash style digital technique I'm developing for one of the technique panels in the ePHOTOzine book.

nice colours. maybe it's this monitor at work, but the background looks a little computer generated. and do i see jaggies in the diagonal edges of the prop?

it's amazing what the right monitor can do, because at home i can see nothing and at the office i see everything, even stuff that istn't there. is it just me or does the texture of the metal look oversharpened?

i was going to click anyways, though, because the light and colours are very dramatic, and the prop has lots of charm.

Intriguing lighting effect - I'd be interested in reading that section of the book.

There appears to be a dark halo arround the edge of the prop - or is that what ring flash would give you?

Apart from that I like it.

Very modern image. Works well. Should try the ring flash on a few portraits next.

Hmmm, still working on the book, eh? Well, judging by this as one of many images, and part of many techniques, I'm sure, it's bound to be worth reading. Looking forward to it!

The colours look better than the original but the dark band around the oilcan does give away the manipulation. Might well be deliberate, as it looks good but it doesn't look like the results of ringflash!

The can does look as though it's floating on the background, but it's still quite striking regarding colour and contrast.

Thanks all.

Ian when I say ring flash I don't mean one of those little things used for macro. I mean true studio ring flash like a Norman. I saw this effect first when I assisted Steve Parker in London who'd worked on Benson and Hedges adverts. The effect he created using ring flash was a black halo shadow ("dark band") like the one I've recreated here.

David Calvert uses one for fashion...here

The thing that I maybe should do is remove the highlight on the background that I've also added, and the shadow below the can so just the digital ringflash shadow is evident. But in reality the other lighting effects could have all been created in studio too.

Morning Pete, has a lovely glow like quality and a touch of nostalga about this which is very appealing.

Take care Victor

I think its a great digitally manipulation but I agree with noseprint I also think the texture of the metal look a bit oversharpened. Maybe its my monitor I dont know? Still a great manipulation though and a real eyecatching thumnail. The title fits real good with the picture =)

Hi Pete, I don't know if its just me but I think it looks a little two dimentional, maybe a slightly different angle would help

Hi Pete,
I like this. When I saw the thumbnail it reminded me of an old poster. Do you know the one I mean? Excellent job - I love the colours and lighting on the lamp. Is this ring type flash used for any type of photography in particular. Cant wait for the technique panel.
