We had an invasion of Blue Damselflies this morning, with up to six dotted around at any one time.

I took the opportunity to play with different flash and lens combinations and particularly liked this result which shows details of the face amd mouth-parts.

It was hand-held using the "Rocking focus" technique with the camera in full manual mode

Thanks for the rapid and positive feedback Andy, Luke, Boyd, Terry, Maddie, Pete, Greg, Paul and Willie.

Willie "Rocking focus" is when you manually set the lens focal distance (in this case I set it at minimum distance for a 1:1 macro), move the camera in to focus the shot and then rock gently back and foward to get sharp focus on the point desired - in this case the front of the face. The trick is then to press the shutter just as you are coming into focus, it can take a bit of doing!

(It wouldn't have been possible to use a tripod for this one and even a monopod would have been difficult because it was posing in the middle of a tightly planted part of the garden - mind you - all our garden is "tightly planted" Smile

Thanks Gerry, Sandy & Charlotte. Ugly? its a work of art - unattractive maybe Smile

The closest focus with the SP90 is about 9 inches from the subject to the sensor (which is about 4 inches from the end of the extended lens). When I get the money I really must get the Sigma 150 macro and get some more space!
