We were at the Birmingham motorcycle show today at the NEC.
It's the first time I've been to the show and I managed to restrain myself and only bought a book and a couple of accessories. I could have very easily bought another bike (what credit crunch?) ![]()
I took the D80 but initially didn't see anything that inspired me to want to photograph it.
Of course some of the stands had scantily clad females to attract the male punters. And I thought well if this was a studio I'd have to pay for a model's time. But here at the bike show the models are free. So here's a picture of the model from the Carole Nash stand who very kindly posed for me.
I've used available light with no fill in flash (mistake number 1?) so the light is a little harsh I guess.
It's a highish ISO (400) so the image is slightly noisy. And I've never photographed a model before so I am very open to advice and critique (particularly regarding flash lighting).
Having poked my camera at a live model I realise that it was great fun and would definitely like to do a proper photo session in a studio. I can see now that it would be lots of fun.
Let me know your thoughts.
Cheers, Ken.

Hey Dianna,
Well I was tempted to buy a variant of the bike that I've already got but it's not even a year old so it would be crazy to change it, particularly as it's a great bike and does the job perfectly.
(I think you've seen pictures of it in my PF)
Any advice though (you've done loads of this type of work)?
I am looking for ways to improve.
Cheers, Ken.
Nice shot - I can see you established rapport with the model. A touch of fill-in flash would have lightened the face a bit. The pose could have been just a little more like riding a bike - with one hand draped over the left handlebar grip, head slightly to one side...or have I turned the pages of too many Playboys in my youth?
Cheers, Chris
V1 - Well yes, I realised long ago that there's more to motor shows that motors... And while the get-up may look a bit draughty for the motorway I did see a male biker in Edinburgh wearing very similar heels.
V3 - Catch 'em young.
V2 - Well there's a promising model if ever I saw one...
Cheers,
Moira
Hi Anthony,
Maybe we brushed shoulders lol.
I think she was the prettiest of the pro models there. And I think she must have been quite experienced by the way she posed and interacted.
So, what was your favourite toy at the show?
I have no experience of lighting beyond flash & very rarely use that either. But the flash on the D70 - probably the D80 also - works extremely well as a fill-in with a paper hankie as a diffuser. It would have been sufficient to remove that shadow. However, the model is really pretty so it doesn't notice too much ![]()
The backdrop is a little strange (not your choice I know) as it's carefully contrived to have motion blur in the middle ground, making hands-off riding (and helmet-off riding) implausible.....
Joking apart, photographically this is a great effort; exposure is excellent. I know, jealousy will get me nowhere.

Bill, Thanks for the advice. I'll try that. I am wondering whether to by a flash but like you I am not sure how often I would use it.
A flash would have evened out the light on her face I think. But really a bit of fill in from the side or 45 degrees would be the ideal.
It is a bit of a strange effect with the background I admit. I thought about asking her to move away from the background so that I could use a better backdrop. I was thinking maybe my place or perhaps the south of France lol ![]()
Cheers, Ken
(PS I hope you are having a more interesting Saturday than me. I've got my head in a load of manuals now
)
Moira is baking and smoking (duck, chicken and sausages) for England (her words). I'm making pot after pot of tea. After the hell of Newcastle shopping this morning even these simple activities come as a relief.....
Cheaper than a flash, and much cheaper than a trip to the S of France, would be a reflector. That would give you the 45-degree angle without electronic wizardry or extension cables, but you'd need someone else to hold it for you.
Moira asks: Did the young lady have a friend (to hold a reflector, she means)?

This is my most viewed upload ever.
Note to self: Must include girl in shot and use Nude/glamour tag from now on ![]()
