B17 Series
‘Aluminium Overcast’
An illustration of the near truth of the joking comment about the 8th USAAF B17 formations - the lead section of the 832nd Sqdn covers the sky when outbound to European targets. Part of the 486th Bombardment Group based at Sudbury, England, this group was in the midst of all the WW2 action from mid-1944 onwards.
During the group operations in 44-45 the 486th lost 23 aircraft and a further 29 so badly damaged they were written off. Almost all of these losses were due to flak (although at least six were due to collision) but none were caused by Luftwaffe fighter action - a reflection on the severe attrition the earlier missions had caused the German air arm.
Title should really be ‘aluminum’ but then I am an unreconstructed Limey!!

Just knew this had to be one of yours. Nice work as usual.
Another superb image, stunning work and an excellent write-up too.
