Another image of this fasinating Arachnid. This is a view from the side showing web silk from its silk glands and is a protein fiber. Quantitatively, spider silk is five times stronger than steel of the same diameter which makes it almost as strong as kevlar, the toughest man made polymer. Spider silk is waterproof, elastic, tough, so it makes no wonder that it is of such interest to materials chemists since new ultra-strong fibres based on the silk could be developed.
