The pelican, the ancient symbol of love and sacrifice seemed a good emblem for this day.
Legend has it that the pelican will feed her chicks with her own blood in times of famine and stress. It is a prechristian symbol that was adopted by the early Christian church and has recorded history as far back as Physiologus, a work from Alexandria around the second century. It was used often in Renaissance literature, and appears often in churches to symbolize Christ.
