Hi,
This could have been a cracking picture as your quite close to the cannon's so the detail should be good. If you have PS you can go to "Exposure" and with the bottom eyedropper click on something "offwhite/grey" and with the middle one click on something darker and then adjust the opacity, It will recover some detail.

Yes I shall give that a try but not sure that in real life we aways see the detail when it is getting dark. I found this mistake to be haunting and sinister, the waiting for an unseen enemy. Maybe raise the highlights a little as a moonlight effect.
I think I stopped down to get a slightly deeper depth of field but forgot to increase the length of the exposure.
