Some people on Bournemouth beach on a dull day.
I had a chat with someone the other day about photo manipulation and how it's not proper photography. Well, for me it's all about the final image and wether you like it or not. Be it photoshop, filters, the darkroom or none of the above. Either way it's the picture in the frame that you look at, not how you got there.

Great work Martin you've acheive a successful image indeed. Worth a click.
Pat
Really effective and unusual, I don't suppose you want to share how you did it?? Jane
Thanks for the comments.
Jane:- simple really, using photoshop I opened up the channel mixer, ticked the monochrome box, pushed up the red, green and blue to whiten the shore. Then opened brightness and contrast and pushed up the contrast to darken the figures.
Hope this helps.
Martin.
Hey Martin not sure if Pete gives EC on the weekend but I can smell one coming. ![]()
I like this image,i like it a lot.As for the debate on manipulation,it's everyone to his own, personally i tend to tweak some of my shots if they need it,i have'nt got into serious manipulation yet,and probably never will, but if you've got the skill and the patience to spend a lot of time on your computer, well if you enjoy it why not.
WOW! Thanks to you all for the comments. Breaking the ten click mark has given me a real buzz.
Cheers.
Martin.
If you wish to use digital manipulation on your shots, then that is up to you. You don't have to please anyone other than yourself. If you then please others that is a real bonus. As for this image, I really like it, it is quite striking and I'm not surprised by the interest it is generating. So I'll give it click no 16.
WOW! and WOW! again. I've got an EC award!
Can't thank you enough for the interest, I'm well pleased you all like it.
Martin this is fantastic, my imagination is going into overdrive now with all the possibilities using this effect (and thanks for sharing) Well done on the award, one of the most striking pictures I've seen for a while. I agree with you about the digital manipulation, the final picture speaks for itself I think.
Great image Martin - well done on the EC.
As for those people out there who question the validity of Photo manipulation and/or retouching - I would say that the whole process of photography be it digital or 'traditional' is to have a 'hands on' approach to create a specific style of image.
Digital retouching/manipulation is purely an extension to 'traditional' dark room techniques, where the 'traditional' photographer had full control over how an image was to appear through varying processing and printing techniques, be it colour or b&w - this image reminds me very much of a b&w litho print - another acceptable and 'traditional' technique.
I'll climb down from my soap box now, keep up the good work!!
Paul.
Deserved indeed!!!! One of the better DM images i have seen...great colour contrast and imagination in the image!!!
Yeah congrats on your first award. Strong image. Thanks for your post on my pic!
Regards
Thanks for the advice, I'm going to have a go - your picture is a real inspiration Jane
Well I guess this was and is a very popular image. I really like it too. I guess you have used the contrast bar cranked up to give little detail but plenty of atmosphere. Very nice and it could be hung on a wall I recon.
Images can (not quite as easily) be manipulated in the darkroom so I see no problem. When an image is totally "created" then it's not a photograph but until you get to that point it fits the bill as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, to the point, an excellent image, simple but effective. Congratulations on the EC, well deserved.
Had to add my click to this one! I LOVE the graphical feel to it..

Hi Martin. I am very interested on how you got this effect. Any chance of dropping me an email?

I like what you said in your statement. Its the final image that counts not how you got there. Some people consider Photoshop as a easy way of correcting photographic mistakes however to truly know photoshop is an art on its own. I've been a graphic designer for 7 yeas working with magazines, advertising, marketing companies etc. Now I have been working as a photographer for few years and with digital cameras being so accessible photoshop became a great tool and extension of photography weather we like it or not. Its like saying that digital photography is not really true photography cos you can see what you shot right a way therefore you can correct our mistakes more effectively. On top of it all every image that we see in magazines on packages, posters etc made its way through photoshop I think its time to accept it.
Cheers!!
Mike
Hi Love yourportfolio. do you do talks for camera clubs? looking for next season
love di xx
Wonderful - powerful, yet simple image. I'm a great fan of such pictures and I think its irrelevant or what camera or technique you use to get there.
Chris.
Cheers.
Pete - Bloody lost the disc that it was on - gutted!
Martin.
