I saw lots of this species of bee in Madeira on a holiday in July 2012. It's taken with the Tamron SP 90mm macro f/2.5, attached with adapter to a Sony NEX-5N. This lens gives 1:2 magnification and I've done some cropping to improve composition (or to appeal more to me anyway!)

Lovely shot - You've absolutely nailed the focus!

Did you blur the background post shot? not sure how you managed to get that much depth of field without getting some of the background in focus.

Taff, thanks. I haven't blurred the background - can't exactly remember what aperture I used as it's not recorded in the EXIF data and I haven't got the patience to write down my settings! I suspect there was sufficient separation between bloom and background to enable it to be out of focus.
