thanks david, i was told yesterday i should resize images before uploading, and sharpen after the resize and it seems to have worked much better than just uploading the full size image.

It's really up to you. We resize high-res photos down and then add an unsharp mask after (like photoshop does) and have found it works generally quite well in most cases. By resizing yourself, we just copy the image directly without any further processing.
