A nice first attempt Paul,
You will find you need to keep the subject on the same focal plane as the camera and use quite small apertures at close distance.
On this image at f8 the body is in focus but the front leg is already soft, f14 would probably have produced a better image,

Like the simplicity Paul and very good advice from Graham, the only problem you then have is slow shutter speed, macro photography is hard mate!

Not sure I get it now Paul, perhaps the meaning of the statement is to get down low - I guess that would be it! Why don't photographers speak in English
