Superb - I know where you got the idea from and you have worked it brilliantly. Now where can I get a perfect ginger background for my ginger German Shepherd?
good attempt, the dog looks a bit too passive though, and the effect is quite strong - if you had saved the original pic as a background layer I'd be saying, reduce the opacity of this to about 60% so the processing effect isn't so storng.
THe other thing is a bit more eagerness/longing in the dogs eyes, tilting upwards towards the camera more...

handsome dog and those eyes and beautiful coat shining make a fine image
2 of the hardest shots to achieve are black on black and white on white, your halfway there John, superb exposure..One more tip... put a snoot behind the dog and you gat a halo effect which gives more dimension..
