Another from War & Peace Revival on Friday - the bright sunlight was really challenging. Comments and criticisms are welcome and thanks for looking.
Many thanks to Nezih and John for your UAs for Battle fatigue. Smile

Given the lighting I think it's as good as it can be, think I'd do a mono version just to see if it worked any better though Ann......Good shot all the same.

You've made the difficult light the story, in a way. Like Ade, I wondered about b&w. The eyes could be tricky - you've lightened the shadows there, if you try a b&w you'll need to be careful about the area across the bridge of his nose where I think you'll get banding. The eyes work here because of the cooler greenish tone reflected from his hat over his brows. That tone is important, in the hat and the jacket, it balances the skin tones. Will be interested to see a b&w in due course.

I think this is an excellent low key portrait Ann.
You isolated him from the dark b/g and the neutral colours work well.
With males you can get away with harsher shadows than in a female portrait.
Moira makes some interesting points, so I'll be curious to see the mono too.
Hope a few portrait photographers give an opinion.

An excellent character portrait, very well captured. The harsh light makes the image, it explains his screwed up eyes and fully reveals (less than kindly) the texture of his skin and stubble. Nobody will be surprised to hear that I wouldn't go for black & white as I think the khaki uniform colour is important the the event. Instead I would go for a sepia tine that echoed that khaki.

I like this colour version. I think we need to see the difference between the khaki of his clothes and the red of his face. It puts him into context. I like the grey in the whiskers too. The harsh light suits him perfectly and his backward gaze is the perfect pose. The unlit roll-up is the final piece of this impressive jigsaw of a portrait.
Nice one Ann.

Very nice Ann. One thing that comes with harsh light and beards is sharpness with increased contrast. So need to sharpen just a little. I reduced harshness and sharpness in the mod.

Good cropping and negative space Ann and it's good that you have gone for landscape format.Going to mono would change the whole concept and feeling that this image has. You end up with a hoodlum. possibly a sepia but I would leave it exactly as it is.
