I was SO grateful for all your support and constructive comments re my entry to our Camera Club's monochrome competition. You were all SO RIGHT but I needed to hear it! You can't always patch up an OK picture to make it good, so I went for this shot as one of 2 entries.. hope you think it is better?! Will upload the other in a few days time then hope to stop thinking about mono for a long time!! Ann.

Lovely as your baby image was , this is better.
Good composition and lovely reflections.
Just check in levels that non of the whites are burned out.
If you go into levels in Elements or Photoshop, hold down the alt key and check the slider at right hand side
to check how much white is on your screen. A little bit is expected and a little black at left hand side so that you have a full tonal range.
Too much white, you'll need to burn in or tone down somehow!
Too much black and the judge will be looking for detail in the shadows.
Sorry if you know all this already. Our club is really keen on mono but I'm not one of the best
so check out other opinions.

I think this is a 'safer' image for a competition Ann. The composition is good and the atmosphere good with the mist. I'm not an expert on b&w but the tones and detail look good to me. I know you'll have an emotional attachment to your grandchild's hand - but I'd go with this one.....
Good luck!
Ann
You haven't said whether it is a print or projected image competition. The tonal range and composition here looks fine for a print but I find with a monochrome projected image you need to decrease brightness by around 20% to avoid the highlights being burnt out.

It is for a print Albert (Fentiger) so I hope the whites are OK . I spent a lot of last minute time on trying to tone that down, ending at 2:0am yesterday as I had to hand the prints in later that day! I really do not have much experience in digiatl b/w so am very grateful for all the advice I have been given by other ephotozine members. Ann.
lovely photo love the mist on the water like it in mono. christine![]()

Some of you might have watched Winter Watch tonight on BBC and if you did you would have seen this boat house. It is at Aigas where they are presently filming for the winter series. I was so excited to see the pine martens and beavers that I had seenfrom the hides beside the loch. It is a truly magical place and I was so privileged to have spent a week there taking photographs. Ann.
I don't know why you would want to stop thinking about mono photography when this is just superb ![]()

Thank you very much! Ann.
