Hot off the press - taken less than two hours ago. Unfortunately, no mist, but a beautiful clear tranquil morning. The colour of the reflection in the water is deeper than the colour of the sky - I think I read somewhere once that this isn't good - any clarification, please?
Thanks for looking and for any criticisms and/or comments.
Ann
Just decided to upload another version, taking into the sunrise from the other side of the castle.

Good morning Ann, what a superb shot, great light and composition, and those reflections are to die for.
Hugh
I can't explain the conundrum you pose today, Ann, but I remember reading something about this once: reflections can be darker or lighter and it all seems to relate to time of day, light quality and direction and other factors, but your image in V 1 looks completely natural so I would not be concerned in any way. Very well composed shot with excellent reflections in the flat calm waters. The colouring in V 2 is quite different, generally warmer, but it's V 1 for me of the two.
Ronnie.
This is really rather lovely, Ann. The castle could be walking on the water, if you see what I mean. Outstanding clarity and a beautiful sky.
I haven't heard the one about respective tonal depth of original and reflection; it sounds more like someone's personal preference than an obvious fault.
Regards
Bill
Re the comparison between sky and reflection, I think it may be in part because the reflected sky doesn't go 'down' as far as the brighter light that we see at horizon level in the upper part of the image, so proportionally the reflection is darker.
This is a beautiful comparison, of the two I think V1 is the right lead, for composition, detail, clarity. But I love the tones in V2. A very gentle, very English dawn.

What a absolutely superb shot, both of them, but I love the warmth of the colors in V2, and no matter about the reflections!!! they work and thats all that counts...Jo
I like them both very much Ann - but I think V1 just edges it for me today - just lovely!
Carol
The sun lights up the sky directly, but the water is only indirectly lit, ergo the reflection will naturally be slightly darker. Later in the day when the sun is higher, the sky and reflection will be more identical.
V1 for me today, Ann, but don't ask why as I don't know myself!
Malc
I love to see this sort of comparison, the same subject taken from two opposing angles - the difference in lighting effect can be so striking. V1 is so perfect, wonderful clarity of detail and a beautiful sky..... but V2 gets my vote for the soft warm tones which lend an air of enchantment, like a fairy tale castle.
Theresa
The reflection is normally darker than the reality, it's a rule of thumb and the phsics is beyond me, but it dos look better that way, I do a lot of reflection shots and have played about with some.
You missed the mist here but it's till a very attractive image Ann. You'll be back no doubt.
Dougie
Hi Ann
2 lovely images. On balance I think I prefer V2. The composition works better IMO.
Re relative light/dark of reflected skies. As Dougie and Malc have said the reflected tones would normally be darker so you have it correct in your image. I have learnt to be careful with ND grads when I am using them on images with reflections in water. I tend to use soft grads with lakes which seems to keep things looking quite natural.
Is V2 an older shot? Looks to me like a sunset rather than a sunrise due to the position of the sun. (Unless you have done some really complicated work in post production)
Derek
