" Just dig my grave beside the railroad
So I can hear the trains go by" ..... Ry Cooder
In 1866 construction commenced for a new rail line in Leeds. The route cut through the burial ground of the parish church. To prevent desecration of the graveyard the railway had to pass on a solid embankment so as not to interfere with the graves.
The gravestones from the graves under the embankment were to be placed in the corresponding position on the slopes.
Needless to say they have moved round a bit.

Boomers?? Barbara. Excellent write up. In Hobart they took the moved grave stones and built them into memorial walls. They look very effective and suitable memorials.

Great piece of social history, one does have to wonder how much peace they are getting though ![]()

What a strange story. I like the fact that you have kept the image simple, factual.
In the 1860s the railway had the sort of right of way that beggars belief now - a chunk of Newcastle's medieval walls was demolished to accommodate it!

Fascinating story, Barbara.
Constructing the main line from Newcastle to Edinburgh necessitated cutting through the medieval town walls , missing the castle itself by not very much......

A new interpretation of RIP, at least they won't notice the late arrivals here, and it's not standing room only just yet.

the replacement of the grave stones seem to be very randomly placed indeed... just as well there hearing is a tad worserer (a fine bit of badderer english) your narrative tells all well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWM54EElzVM

Not a case of ''rest in peace'' here I am afraid.
It is an electrified rail line too, with the ''used'' electricity being dishcharged into the ground too !!
A lot more to this one than meets the eye !!
Mick.
I believe this this other side of the railway line from Leeds bus station, isn't it? I've often glanced when travelling into Leeds on the bus, but never really looked at it properly. A well seen shot, Barbs, and the iggledy-piggledyness of the gravestones is picked out well against the snow ![]()

Just wondering what the word 'don't refer's to at the left of the tree Barbara ![]()
Geoff.
Interesting info Barbara.
Those headstones have certainly moved around.
