I'd guess you've taken this whilst standing on the breakwater next to the pier.
You'd have got a better composition if you'd taken it from the road above the promenade. (Opposite the Royal Albion).
I've uploaded a mod in which I've made an adjustment using the red curve, I've increased the vibrance (sustantially!), sharpened and straightened it.
Hope it's OK.

Does anyone actually refer to it as "Brighton Pier"?
I thought the locals still referred to it as the "Palace Pier".
Not an inspiring photo, I'm afraid. The weather is very, very dull, which means that most of the photograph is taken up with dull grey sky and a dull grey sea. When the sky is this flat, it's best kept out of photos as far as possible; flat seas aren't well suited to seascapes and flat, shadowless light isn't well suited to architectural shots because it's the shadows that give definition to the shapes. I'm sorry to be so negative but the weather defeated you before you even picked up your camera.
On the technical side, the photo is sharp and straight but seems rather under-exposed. The whites of the pier have come out at 40% grey, which is, in fact, about twice as dark as the grey bands at the side of this page. It appears brighter in the photograph but that's an optical illusion.
On a day like that, I think I'd try some indoor photography. If there are amusement arcades on the pier, they can make interesting subjects, though you should ask for permission since you're on private property at that point.

It was a very gloomy day but could not resist taking a few photos while out and about.
I can now see I should have cropped off some of the sky to bring the pier more to life. I will be looking at getting a photo shop to, to help me with any tweaks, Jester mod really makes it look like a sunny day, and I can see a bit of the beach in the left hand corner that was just grey before.
Next outing I will be looking at getting different angles to make it more interesting.
I was really working on getting my next photos straight and I am glad this was noticed.
