Looks good in the B and W presentation: losing the colour of the heather is a minus of course, but other factors make up, eg. the contrast between the shadowed Buachaille and the bright sky behind.
As there is a good range of tones and contrasts, the B and W version does work well, and as you say, the sky is often better.

Beautifully captured images Phil, all wonderful but for me it has to be V3 - it is stunning!

v3 for me, or maybe v2... but then again... they're all pretty damn good shots.

Three excellent captures Phil, love them all..............Martin
Yes most people including me like the colour of v3 best but what you are really after is comment on your mono. I think this is fine and any club judge would have difficulty in finding fault with it however we don't know what else is in the competition so we cannot guarantee the result. The small area I would look to improve on is the high light area in the water. I know that is what water looks like but it just takes my attention perhaps slightly too much.
If it were mine Phil I would have no hesitation in entering it on the other hand if I had to choose between colour and mono I would go for colour.
In our club if we enter a black and white image we are not allowed at any time to enter the colour version.
good luck.
Danny
PS....If you don't want to use it can I borrow it.

This works well in monochrome Phil. The trade off , to me, being the loss of the colour given by the Heather against what, to me, is a much better sky when rendered in monochrome.
Before printing , I would suggest that the water highlights are given a wee bit of attention , as that area seems to keep grabbing my attention , rather than allowing my eyes to wander through the scene. I'm assuming that the RAW file is showing no blown highlights but feel that a little " recovery" in that area of water will make all the difference.
Hope it does well for you in the club competition.

Super images, Phil, I have to say I prefer the colour, V3 being my fave, though the sky looks more dramatic in mono ![]()

v3 is my choice today - but I hope your mono does well for you in your competition Phil ![]()

It has all been said really. The water does take away from it slightly. Was this a conversion of the colour image - or did you start afresh from the RAW? The reason I ask is that sometimes its better to start from the RAW for mono conversions - for example a different colour balace will give different results. I tend to use Lightroom, I have a preset for monos that I temporarily apply to get somewhere close. I then switch this off and output to Photoshop for the proper conversion.
You may be able to pull some of the highlight detail back from the water. Did you sharpen all the image? This will affect the water - beter use selective sharpening. Also if you have a heavy curve layer this can affect it.
If you have lost highlight detail, you could put either a gausian blur or diffuse glow adjustment layer and apply it only to the water.
I hope this makes sense. I normally wouldn't go into detail, but as its for your competition it may help.
