2 Photos of Fisherman & his Cormorants
The Fisherman on the River Li in Guilin, South East China use Cormorants when fishing .
They go out at night in a long, narrow bamboo rafts with a lantern shining on the water .
The Cormorants hunt for fish in the illuminated water, then dive in to get the fish.
The bird is restricted from swallowing the fish by a band around its neck to prevent any expanding throat.
So the bird returns to the surface with the fish in its beak & the fisherman takes the fish from the bird.
The fishermen feed small pieces of fish to the birds after the fishing trip & look after their Cormorants
This was the old traditional method of fishing, but it only continues for the tourists now
