The cockchafer, or May bug, is a European beetle of the genus melothona, in the family scarabaeidae. It was once abundant throughout Europe and a major pest, but the extensive use of pesticides exterminated them. However, since an increase in regulation of pest control beginning in the 1980’s, its numbers have started to grow again. There are many different species to be found in Crete during April and May, here are just a few that I have found.
