Noticed the ants on the bud and put together my trusty G1 and favourite macro lens and an extension tube or two, held the button down whilst slowly backing away. This was the best image of about five.

Can someone count the number of eyes for me, please.

I've been asked how big this ant was; it's about 3 mm excluding antenna. I believe this is Lasius niger, the common black garden ant.

This was entered into a local competition and the idiotic judge (who really should know better) commented that he would have liked to see the legs all in focus. Perhaps the laws of optics are different on his planet!
