These cremation ghats are part of the Pashupatinath Temple complex. Entry to the precinct is forbidden to non-Hindus but tourists and visitors (and their cameras) are accepted on the bridge and opposite bank of the river. The river is the Bagmati, regarded as holy as it flows into the Ganges, and the ashes are swept into it after cremation. The youths in the river are searching for pieces of gold and jewellery which has survived the fire. Needless to say this was the dry season and the river not much more than a puddle!
Many thanks for looking, any comments/observations more than welcome.

The scene itself, and possibly this image, evoked so many different feelings and comments. As Martin says, there was a feeling of disrespect re the youths but the biggest re-action was caused by the act of cremating loved ones in public (as was shown by Greg Davies and Rhod Gilbert on their Dangerous Rd programme in Nepal last night when they came across a similar cremation). I was hesitant about taking this shot (and several others) but was assured by our guide we would not be causing any upset. You have to act sensibly when using a camera abroad stay within the bounds of decency but I also try not to judge by western standards.

Excellent composition and a valid, thought-provoking social commentary.

I agree Anna - total fascination with a scene that is something totally out of our own realm and in another world totally. Not sure I could have handled witnessing something like this, but a wonderful journalistic image to be admired...Jo
That is amazing how other countries do things.
I take it they are Human bodies being burnt, I have to ask as it's a bit of an eye opener.
