Well, lets see how this goes!
I have been wanting to have a go at this type of thing for a while, but not had the courage to do so, but here we are.
A pair of my work boots! Set on kitchen table on black felt, natural sunlight to the right, f8 and 1/8 sec set on tripod. Gave it some tweaks in photoshop and added a sepia filter to tone it down a tad. I am really pleased with the end result so please enjoy.
If you feel it can be improved in any way feel free to point it out as i need all the help i can get at the moment.
Anyway, many thanks for your time.

I really like this sort of image, following in the tradition of photographing things. THere is a lot of character in these boots and they have a proud look about them. And I like the fact that we can just make out the velvet.
I have a few suggestions (they are just a matter of taste):
- the boots are slightly off centre, this might have been deliberate.
- your focal length has created a little perspective distortion towards the toes of the boots (I like this though). a longer FL would slightly flatten the image reducing distortion.
- your f8 is a "who cares" f-stop. This works well if the subject lies more or less in the focal plane (everything will be sharp), but the boots are very 3 dimensional (particularly at this distance), if your appature was around 5.6 then the toes would be definitly out-of-focus or if the appature was 16 or higher then the toes would be in-focus.
- finally (again just a taste thing) the tonal range of the shot is low, if you adjust levels (ctrl/cmd L) and then slide the white (right) triangle towards the left you will see the effect it has on the tonal range. (However I quite like the muted tones you have here).
As I said it is all a matter of taste - hope you don't mind the comments.

Many thanks for the critique guys, just what i needed.
My ides on this shot was one of tiredness, these boots are old, a bit like me, and are well worn and comfy, i did deliberatly leave the toes slightly out of focus to give that slight softness. And the angle as well was delibrate, i didn't want it to seem to staged.
But again many thanks for the pointers, this is what makes this site so good.
Forgot to mention, i uploaded the wrong one!!!! This is a 6 exposure HDR shot then tone mapped, DOH.
May get around to upload a straight one soon.
I would have preferred a greater DOF to get the toes sharp, and the tone is too dark. Pity that you uploaded the wrong one. Let us see the correct one next. Great still life composition.
