I have been wanting to work more on portraits so I signed up for a photography class given at night school in my neighborhood. The instructor's specialty is corporate and wedding photography.

My next few uploads will be some of my homework assignments for my class. I hope I've learned a thing or two. Smile

I thought this one works best in B&W. Let me know what you think.

Yes, I agree that the black and white works very well with this. I enjoy taking classes to hone my meager skills, but also to stimulate my eye into areas I haven't looked. Looking forward to seeing more from your class. The lighting in this is really good. The one thing I would change, is the nub of her other arm just below her chin....well you did askSmile

Black and white does seem to be the better choice-- seems to direct attention to the well lit face and neutralize the bg!

I envy the class -- Jennnn

Good for you Ty, I plan to enroll also for an Advance Photography class during 5 Sundays 8hours each day. But one of their prerequisite is SLR camera. That is the problem. I'm in the stage of keeping some money to buy a SLR.

Both pictures had an impact either way around. Good eye contact. Good Luck for your studies.

Beautiful quiet portrait. I prefer the b&w version, fewer distractions (in the colour version that patch of blue tends to draw the eye away from the face). I agree with wasper, though...

Mono for me, too, because of the blue patch, though that in itself doesn't ruin the colour version.
I also tend to agree with wasper...

Think I ever-so-slightly prefer the colour version best, Ty - though it's a hard choice. Like the natural pose.

Nice work Ty. Like the way the forearm makes the composition. I like both versions equally.
Andrew

I think you are right Ty....although I like the colour version I think it works much better in black & white,
Good work.

hi ty

i prefer the black and white but whichever works well, the most basic tip with portraits is always focus on eyes = you have done this well, your bg is nicely out of focus which adds impact.

for your first attempt this is very good.

Both excellent Ty, hard to choose between them except, for me, I have a slight bias for the natural when it is offered for comparison.

Nice capture Ty, on the mono I think she looks less than friendly, I don't know why, and I think that's more effective.

Regards Phil

I usually tend to prefer the colour versions, but in this case my choice is the b&w vers.
I do think that the blue in the bg clashes with the other tones and disturbs the balance of vers.2.

I think I prefer the colour one, Ty. The sunlight shows up better and I like that.
