Took this on one of the islands off Bali. Early evening and about 36 degrees still. We were waiting for the waiter to show up, so Dean decided to place hippo.

This would have been so much better if you had a bit more at the bottom and included all of his nose. Other than that, a smidgen dark but pretty well executed.
Ps..someone else will come along and say his eyes need to be on the bottom right third!

I know why the nose has not been included.. its because the face under water would have destroyed it.. I like it this way only.. and the choice of tone too is apt as it is very objective, and should lead the eye right on his face above the surface of water.. I think there's nothing wrong with this one.. I think rules cant be followed everywhere..

Whats wrong with being different? The classic, memorable images of the past all have broken rules.....this idea has been done before, but it still works and this is executed well. Sharp eyes, nice DOF, nice tones.....

Personally, I feel there is a lack of balance which would be rectified by adding more water below, when composing the image in your viewfinder. I would then like to see the eyes in the top right third (Sorry Sooty).

Using full aperture at f1.2 seems a little strange to me, as this could do with a little more depth of field, the differential focussing would still be present at say f4 or f5.6 and the shutter speed at 1/8000sec allows either to be used with ease. (f4 = 1/2000, f5.6 = 1/1000sec)

This is a nice idea but if your original has more room below the water line try my suggested crop and see how it looks. If the face under the water does destroy it then perhaps I would need to think again.
