Lovely shot. Kids playing like they should & we used to do years ago before the do-gooders put a stop to it. The sepia works well too. Love it.

The lighting is all over the place!
You have bright spots either side, or a dull bit in the middle depending on how you view it. You must move the lights around until you can see the background is lit evenly. In this case you probably needed to move them further away to get a wider spread to cover the bit in the middle. At least you seem to have avoided glare and spill from these lights, so that's good.
I suggest you practice lighting the background and get it right before your models arrive, that way you can set up without feeling pressured. I recommend shooting tethered so you can see when the lighting is good. If you cant do this, then check the histogram/blinking overexposure this would have shown up the unevenness that you have.
The set up is fun. My only niggle, the way the kid is holding the gun, it looks like he is just about to blow his head off, that is not the way a cowboy holds a gun when he has just shot someone! If the idea is that he is blowing the smoke off, the gun should be the other way around. I know I'm sounding like a pedant but hey.

Oh crikey is it that bad Martin I thought it was a bit bright, as the stripes in his t shirt are not defined. When my laptop is out of intensive care I will set up to shoot and view, have uploaded the set up behind this one, re: the niggle about the gun. he's a kid, and only three, you kind of have to take what you get i think..would take too long to explain how to hold a gun

Think of it as 2 lighting setups, one for the background one for the subject. I cant see much wrong with your set up, the lights just needed to be angled more sharply so that you didn't miss a bit in the middle.
Re the set up, For me its attention to detail that really makes a difference. I know he's not really a cowboy, ( he's not even wearing any shoes), that's Suspension of disbelief. However he can hold the gun properly, why do you have to explain it? Your the director!
I would have moved the gun on the floor away from the hat for separation and why is the barrel removed? It might have worked better if he was still holding the gun.

I can understand Jack's parents, you've done a great job earlier and I still remeber those And I like this one too, looks like some really good fun!
