A party of pensioners heads back to it's coach after a photo call on the steps to Dumfries House.
Dumfries House lies in E. Ayrshire west of Cumnock: it is a Palladian Georgian manor, built between 1754 and 1759 by the Adam brothers for the 5th. Earl of Dumfries. The family later acquired the title of Marquess of Bute, and the 7th. Marquess of Bute (perhaps better known as Johnny Dumfries, the formula one racing driver) decided to sell Dumfries House, retaining his main home of Mount Stuart House on Bute. The National Trust for Scotland did not manage to acquire the property and at the last moment, as contents were being loaded on lorries for transfer to Sotheby's), HRH Prince Charles heard of the situation and under his title of Great Steward of Scotland he headed a consortium of charities and heritage bodies to buy the house, contents and estate in order to keep a historical jewel intact and accessible to the public. The house and it's rooms have remained unchanged for 250 years and contain a large selection of early Chippendale furniture.
If you are ever in the area, it is certainly worth a visit.

Ronnie.

An excellent, well composed image of this beautiful house, Ronnie!
And a very interesting description, too!
Didn't the Earl(s) of Bute have something to do with coal mining and the docks in Cardiff?
I could be wrong!

You are quite right, Richard: if you Google Marquess of Bute you'll find some interesting facts about the family's interests historically.

Excellent write up and capture Ronnie, the Marquess of Bute also owned two castles Cardiff Castle and Castle Coch (Red Castle) the last one has been used for many films such as the black night with Alan Ladd.

Kindest regards

Trev.

Bright, sharp and well composed, Ronnie. The grass 'lines' give a good lead in to the door and the splashes of red make a good contrast to the blues.

I looked at this house and saw Pollok House, the brain sees what it expects to see Ronnie. that's not to say that you always go to Pollok House.
We have a great array of grand houses across Scotland, not all built on good honest cash either.

Hope you enjoy what ever you're gettig up to Ronnie.
