Hi Malcolm,i am going to be totally honest as i see no point in me telling you it's a good shot when it is clearly out of focus,i have looked at your exif and your setting were nearly there, the main reason the image is soft because your ISO was too low for a bird in flight shot, your ISO should have been set at a minimum of 400 just for starter's,then you could go a lot higher depending on light,ISO 100 is not a good setting for bird photography, here are my starter setting's for BIF's ISO 400,AE,Al servo, high speed continuous, centre weighted average (but that's just a personal choice),single central focus point,AWB,

hope that help's,

John.

perhaps a little soft but the main body of the bird is fairly sharp. Perhaps not competition winning image for this , but great timing, the background is nicely thrown out of focus nicely and motion in wings and talons expresses movement . Great try and an image to be proud of.

I think this is a great shot! It's a moving subject for goodness sake, and the head is acceptably sharp. The wings and claws are moving, so for them to be pin sharp would be unnatural.
This works fine for me.

It might not be the best of images looking at it with expert eyes, but it sure was a great opportunity and had to be a quite quick shot. I think you did well. I'd treasure such an image!
