My current obsession is with minimal black and white photographs. In this particular photo I was looking for a single point of focus but with enough cues to allow the views to establish context, in this case landscape.

It certainly is minimalistic which was your aim, but I cannot connect it with landscape. Perhaps it might be better classed as 'abstract.'

I have a ricoh R8 which I keep in the car or my pocket for those surprise moments, lovely equipment they make.

Thanks for taking the time to comment - that was indeed my concern that I had crossed the border abstract so to speak. I guess it was more hope that expectation that folks would recognise that the top of the photo was a reflection and that this was a river bank etc. Cheers Frank.

I disagree i think the mountains in the background keep it as a landscape photo. I think it's a brilliant photo congratsSmile John

Photography becomes very subjective after technical considerations. This one is difficult to assess technically even - I would have thought a bit over exposed, but not sure. I'm afraid you have crossed the line for me - rarely keen on abstracts and I struggle a bit here.

However, you are trying to be different, and I applaud that - just not for me this time.

Kinda works for me. I can certainly see that it is a landscape and I like the abstract feel. But what I find distracting is all the lens flares on the mountain area - they pull my eye strongly to that part of the pic and away from the edge. I suppose your problem is that you need to have some sort of differentiation of tone in the hill area or else it will just be a dark space. Also the mountain area is very large and dominant in relation to the edge. But it's interesting work and I would say keep going with it.

Best wishes

Catherine

Welcome to EPZ Roddy.

The real interest in this shot lies at the lower portion of the frame. The upper area, - for me at least, is a distraction, and does trigger that conversation above.. I like the idea though, and have uploaded a mod using only the bottom which is more abstract.

Dont forget to also upload your exif data or shot settings for future critiques, - it helps us help you!

Regards

Willie

Now I'm wishing I'd taken a straightforward photo to help provide some post critique context Wink This is actually a steeped banked highland river, the lens flares that Catherine comments on are actually white rocks - these are in turn reflected in the river. The 'edge' is ice. I did increase contrast and sats to 'enhance' the minimal/abstract feel - seems I have both succeeded and failed! Thanks all for taking the time to comment - most helpful and appreciated. I actually thought I'd OK'd the exif data - still getting to grips with the settings.

Did I mention I was struggling with the settings - lovely job on that modification Willie, I think that really works, thanks again.
