I had never been closed to a mill before.. but it seemed I was with one each week in the past two weeks Grin..
This is Ellis Windmill on Mill Road in Lincoln, behind Museum of Lincolnshire Life. There were 9 windmills on Mill road before, but Ellis mill is the only one left today. It was a bit windy when I was there, the sails were turning.. standing under the mill, listening to the story about the mill told by the volunteers... it took me back to the centuries..made me feel very small..Smile
Thank you all very much for your advices on my previous windmill photo. This photo was shot underneath the mill, I was a lot closer to it. I didn't make it as "dramatic" as the previous one..but I cropped off some sky this time.Wink.. I'd like to have your idea about this one as well. Burn and dadge tool have been used on the sky.
Thanks for looking. I don't think that I will take more mills' image in the near futureGrin.
BTW, thank you all very much for your adivces on my uploading yesterday. Especially thank Lynne for her MOD on "Skit in the air". I'll upload her work under this photo's MOD section for you to enjoy.

Great tonal range. Only critique is that it needs to be slightly levelled.

A rather detailed foreword supported by the rather impressive monochromatic photograph showing the gorgeous Windmill off at its very best. Great tonal range, and a great perspective.

Nice shot Jasmine. I like the angle, and the dramatic clouds.

A couple of suggestions.

Theres some wires on the lower right, and a building lower left that can be removed. Makes the windmill look likes its standing alone. I would like to see more detail/less black in the brickwork, and the dome with the highlights reduced just a little.

Right edge has a few small areas where there may have been some cloning, just needs a little tidying.

Ive loaded mods to show all this, - mod2 is just a toned version.

Hope this is helpful,

regards

Willie

I couldn't resist having a play with this Jasmine just to show some of the many possibilities with this terrific image.

Thank you very much, Willie. Nice MOD, it looks a lot tidier without house...

Yes, there were two horizontal wires on the right corner. I cropped one off, because I didn't want to lose too much mill. The mess perhaps the lens hood that made a bit dark corner that I didn't cropped off totally. I took a few shots this time. I 've had more experience now..Grin, No, actually the sails were turning fast, I had to get theone that the sails at the right angle to fill in the frame "nicely".

I brightened the whole image up.The contrast of the white dome and dark mill( body) was quite strong under the light. I was worried that the white dome would lose detail. I just had a look the original, it would need 3 stops to get the mill's (dark part) detail out. Guess what? The noise came out as wellGrin. It perhaps needs bracketing. I'll remember this when I see another dark mill next time..Smile

Only one question, Willie. How did you tone V2? I quite like it but I couldn't work out how you did it.

Hue/saturation and colour balance wouldn't work on Mono;

Channel mixer and selective colour are possible but it seems complicated, because I don't know which colour to tune to get straight forward result from mono;

Warm filter is also possible, but not quite right, as yours;

The last one is Variations. I have never used this before, not quite looks like yours either..

---------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much Lynne for your MODs and artistic approach.."Duotones", I have never tried this one either. How do you get duo tones? Are they from the Variations?

Thank you all for your kind comments.

In CS6, - and perhaps CS5, - I found quite by accident a way to tone.

Open the colour adjustment tool; at the top, theres a drop-down called Presets; one of the presets is sepia; select it; and by varying the saturation slider, or opacity if on a layer, you can get just a small amount of toning. Its magic!

For duotones:

Mode>greyscale; answer OK to the loss of colour data; then mode>duotone, and you will have a drop down of a large number of variations on duo tones and tri tones; you can try them, and adjust them to your liking. Then, mode>RGB and save.

Morning Willie,
Yes! It is magic. It is a great "discovery".
Perhaps CS5 and CS6' s lists are not quite same. I have to find it from Hue/saturation>preset>sepia...and the most interesting part is the whole set of layers to adjust, one could get endless results to play..I perhaps only use less than 5% of the capacity of PS.

Also thank you very much of the duo tone. This is another setting I've never touched before. It is really great to know, and hopefully it will help other members who are interested in your technique and great help.
Thank you all.
Jasmine.
