A Darter Dragonfly emerging from its larval stage after spending the first stages of life underwater.
Probably the most difficult image I have ever taken. This little fella was almost at water level and was a lot smaller than it looks! I got soaked.....worth it though!
Positive ID would be welcome, I'm going for Black Darter.

Wow, what timing and what a result mate....kept that one quiet didn't you?
Superb.
Difficult to tell when they're what's known as Teneral, (just emerged) however I'd be more inclined to think it was a Common Darter, but I've been known to wrong on countless occasions
What I can say is this is an excellent find and as you rightly say a very tricky capture, which you've done with aplomb!.. Quality image and very deserving of an award IMHO.....Shortlisted.

Only just stumbled across this. A cracking capture of a special moment I've never been fortunate enough to see yet.
I'd have gone for the option of a soaking as well if the opportunity arose!
I'd have probably stuck it out through the rain as well for the opportunity to get a full emergence sequence as opportunitys like this don't come about often.
When you say stacked, how many images went into this shot? And what software did you use? Stacking images is something I keep meaning to play with properly to get greater depth of field in macro shots.
I'm sure it looks great over the fireplace... I believe that when winning POTW you can get away with sending a different image for the canvas print if you want. Back when I won one they had no idea what my winning image was so I could have sent anything. I did send the original image, however advised someone else that won not soon after me to try a different image and they got a nice family pic blown up on a canvas instead of a macro shot. There must be a lot of people out there with canvas prints of stunning images, but not necessarily images you'd want hung up in the lounge! ![]()
Quite brilliant, you should be very proud of this one.....I've come across Praying Mantis and Grasshoppers 'drying out' next to their shed skin but have never been lucky enough to find them in the act.....I think I need to get up earlier in the morning.
