A great point of view, and a great image. "Maybe some of the detail could be brought out in the background?" Or on the other hand convert to monochrome....

I can see what you liked about this scene. I agree with Nathan about converting to monochrome. I've tried something and hopefully it's ok.

I did a channel split and chose the green channel. Then I used fill flash at 50% to cast some light on the foreground. After that an increase in contrast by 15% accompanied by an increase in brightness by 5%.

Think it's called a Capstain Netta.
Not sure if I've spelt that correctly but it is for tying up boats.
Very moody image.

Yes Netta,for tying up ships,
and big ones at that with these heavy bolts securing it !!
Agree with the comments,
but good shot nonetheless !!

You need to make more of a feature of the Capstan Netta. The idea is good, and I can see what you were thinking og with the wide format, but in the process perhaps the real focal point is lost.

Cropping, and in the process straightening the capstan makes its larger, and more prominent. The available light and reflections have made it underexposed, so with some brightening, and lifting of colour, and some sharpening, it really pops, while keeping the perspective of the harbour behind. You can actually see the makers name and model on the top.

Loaded a mod with this done,

Hope this is helpful,

Regards

Willie

Bollards.

It's called a bollard. A capstan is a vertically mounted rotating drum used for winding cables, hawsers and ropes, usually turned using wooden stakes inserted in holes to push against.

As for the picture, it's rather dark, which has robbed the scene of much impact. Willie's mod attempts to bring back some foreground detail, but I can't help feel it would emphasise the emptiness of the harbour more if there was more space around the subject, though it should still be placed on the lower right third.
I bet this would look good in the evening, with low angled light picking out texture in various bits of the scene.
