Boyd gets about seven minutes of thinking time an hour - correct, the amount of Ad Breaks in Children's ITV - and on Friday he came up with an idea for a competition that he put to Pete. Pete said yes and all that remained WAS for them to enlist some gullible, easily led, mug photographer to give up into the public domain a full unexpigated RAW file - and I said yes.
So here's the deal. Download the full 15.5mb 1DsMKII RAW file from HERE and use it to come up with the perfect gallery print. Sort out its faults, enrich it, give it life and then post the 500 pixel version in the modified section - if you you think it would benefit from us seeing the 1000 pixel version then mail it to me at - keith.henson21[at]ntlworld.com - in EPZ file size.
If you haven't got RAW conversion software, you can download a free trial of Capture One from HERE
Judging on Friday:
Prizes: An ePHOTOzine badge or 50% discount for non e2 members and the other 50% paid for by me.
A further £10 off a Northscape course making a £50 EPZ discount.

Cool idea ![]()
I'm onto it, and should have something, assuming I have time :-(
Matt
cheeky monkey ......how long can it take to develop quality.
![]()
I'm just blown away by the quality of your camera - makes mine look like a disposable one ![]()
First competition I know of that makes you spend money to collect your prize.
![]()
lol - I wouldn't be too sure. I recently changed lenses in a corn field - learn't a very useful lesson there.
BTW Good idea for the comp
Feel a PC upgrade coming on, time to make a coffee have a shower, a fag and catch up on all the gossip from Big Brother just by the time PS opened it up :-((((((((((((
Keith, how could you! What am I (and the other non-landscapers) supposed to do with this! I haven't a clue about making "perfect gallery prints" out of a picture of some fields.... goes off muttering in disgust wishing some tomatoes had gone up instead..... ![]()
And there was me thinking that Boyd's Welsh scenery did look very much like the Roaches.
PMSL.
Norfscape discount - if you're an e2 member already then that means the only way to collect your prize is book on a workshop.
![]()
Quote: Norfscape discount - if you're an e2 member already then that means the only way to collect your prize is book on a workshop.
not true, you could win a badge....
LOL....see Boyd
flippin eck, Ian...what do you want....OK...how about a free print of your choice - on art board from me interweb thingy?
and Lydia - stop clicking!!!!! start converting.
![]()
you can do whatever you think it needs to be a winner other than add to it from another shot.
Two in already ........keep em coming
It's just up as a bit of fun the prize is secondary.
But e2 can be used as an extension to the end of your existing membership expiry date.
Nope....
and there you go...official...it's not only fun but worth a whole years e2 membership.
How can you not?
![]()
AND NOT JUDGED UNTIL FRIDAY...less haste more class.
![]()
Lol - It was a bit of tongue in cheek that comment about the prizes. Thought it was some covert method by Keith to suck in more money to the Henson estate.
![]()
And of course I was asking on behalf of the greater ePZ masses.
A selfless gesture, Keith, and a great challenge - many thanks.
Trouble is, I now have to wait ten hours before I can get home and start work on creating a masterpiece. (I wish.)
plenty of time.
four in
and Ian....how very dare you....this image would have made it to the website.....until today.
![]()
boo hoo
some interesting versions coming in...I'll post my version on Friday with the results as well.
And I thought my CCD was dirty!! :o)
Mine was completely stuffed by compression!! And now it looks a bit browny-orange. Hey ho, it was a ten minute job.
Thanks for this Keith - shows there's hope for us mere amateurs ![]()
(I mean that good processing counts a lot - but I knew that already, just nice to confirm it. Stopping waffle.... ![]()
Matt
It's a nice landscape but I'm really not sure about that strange looking border with that diagonal line in it . As there's no large version I can't really see what going on unfortunately.
So, not up to your usual high standard, Keith....
..what?
...oh, it's a screenshot...
![]()
I haven't been using RAW for long, but this looks like fun, I'm going to have a shot as soon I have the time and I'm working on my home computer again. ![]()
Conrad
Well my efforts are in. Only subtle differences between the 3.
That 60k limit is a killer. :0(
Ian
What lens was this with Keith??
It's interesting to see the original and how sharp it is in the centre, but has some detail 'fall-off' to the extremities of the frame.
Paul
info in EXIF bit it was the 16-35 and every lens on the planet falls off at the edge....for a wide angle the 16-35 is about one of the best.
Hi Keith, Have played with options i never used before, excellent idea and a good learning morning for me. sure i sould be somewhere else? picking the wife up! oh well i'll blame you, i'm sure she'll understand.
Andy
Quote: ... Info in EXIF ...
... so it is, silly me ... DOH!!!!
I take it you're the judge, jury and executioner, Mr H?
If so, best cancel my subscription to Acid Smarty Monthly.
![]()
why would we kick you over the horizon Roy....it'd be a damn good kick mind from there.
You're dead anyway, Ian.
oooops...shouldnt have said that.
![]()
Keep them coming....couple of potentials in there....and it made Scotty post a picture...not his, but it's a start!!!
![]()
I have raw shoter essentials. When I try to download I get an icon and a message "Would oyu like to search the web for a programme to open it". Any ideas whats wrong.
PAul
Your version of RS is probably an old one in the days prior to the 1DsMKII files.
Adobe RAW will do them, as will Capture One and that trial of Adobe LR and Canon's own software of course.
I wouldn't have you on a workshop, Ian.........doh!!
Some good stuff coming in.
I can open it in Rs but with no thumbnail. Can't save it to disc....
Ok, opened in explorer, wouldn't open with firefox. Paul
Oh I must have a go at this when I get home tonight...
Can't beleive the amount of difference between some of the results.
John
Can we enter twice? Brilliant idea for a challenge, would make a great weekly competition. Paul
Okay, I've downloaded the RAW file, processed it, added a mount and a frame and now it's on it's way to The Three Roofs Tea Rooms in Castleton (apparently they're desperate for some good prints). Best fifteen quid I've ever earned.
;o)
I'll have a go later, I just need to download some combi to go with it.
I agree with Paul. Brilliant idea.
:o)
enter at will , Paul
Thankfully the Three Roofs pay by BACS...so cheers.

Hi Keith,i've got probs with my computer just now and don't want to try downloading such a large amount plus i'd have to do the software. But at a later date i'd love to try it.Thankyou for letting us try this.Take care.Ann![]()
Was going to join in, but it took 20 mins to download 10%
so i'll have to pass!
Just a file of Hieroglyphs, my computer cannot interpret. C1 LE doesn't recognise it either........ I give in. lol
20 minutes???.....mind you...West Country
Update yer LE, Col.
![]()
3.7.4 is what I got........ Think it's a Mac thing, probably needs a helper app to open it, which I haven't got.
Just a CR2 file you should be OK...it was uploaded from a Mac
I thought the judging was on friday. This is a fix LOL.
I want that badge badly. Andytvcams should be disqualified
. Look at the rules governing any competition and members of the company are excluded.
Do you something against all things Scottish.. the people and the coos?
How about if I put a pregnant ewe (english one) on top of the left coo and a big crow pecking at the udders of the other one... would that get me closer to the badge ![]()
This is really good fun and a real eye opener to see so many variations on the theme, great idea Keith,
Mike
Now yer talking, Scotty.....but yes...and the Welsh......doh!!!
and Andy is just in it for the fun...can't you tell?
![]()
(coat on)
Boyd's idea, Mike
I'll be having a go at this tonight, got something special in mind too..... ![]()
Anthony
Quote: Where did CB get his RAW file??????
... don't know, but I hope he doesn't buy his clothes from there either ![]()
Now see what you've gotten yourself into Keith, bet you weren't expecting this response. Just shows what a great idea it is. paul
Didn't want to clean your raw file keith so i went "muddy"... it took more time in the end :0(
I have just given a small 'gulp' and seen 74 entries to date!!
Right...well done everyone so far....lets hope this feature will become a regular..in fact I know Pete is already on the case...although if it grows it'll need it's own website...LOL
back later when my eyes have calmed down.
![]()
Think it will be a hard job to Judge with all these entries ![]()
Good luck Keith 83 and counting
Angie x
Don't know how on earth you're going to judge this - but I've never seen so many variants from one file! :-|
Matt
Another £10 off a Northscape dogging weekend....errrm I mean Course. Does that mean you're paying people to go now ? ;-D
89?
89 entries plus all the 1000 pixie emails!
We've created a monster!
Some of 'em are still downloading it since lunchtime too!!...Ah the beauty of broadband...34 seconds ![]()
Blimey, yes this is popular. I've had a word with Tom and we will do a few more first to see if they are as popular. If so we will build a special RAW competition area with a really cool feature that I've never seen on any other site. Keep them coming!
an excellent way to learn aswell, especially if we are told where we have gone wrong aswell, lol
The time is 19:00 and the 100 is in.!!!!!!!!!!!!
crikey
OMG I've been slightly Infraredded!!!
The Shame.
Urghhh, I've just uploaded my first attempt and it's puke.
I'll have another attempt tomorrow :o)
I could never scoff as Impartiality is my middle name....and as my first name is Sarcasm you have no idea how hard my silence is to hold.
![]()
Never mind Ian, I can't even download it properly!! Gives me more time to look though, some scarey stuff (and people) out there!!!
Well I blame the poor skills of the photographer. I mean I'm trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
![]()
And your sensor is dirtier than an Amsterdam sex show.
Have you managed?
I love a dirty sensor.
Mine don't look this good normally either
![]()
;0
well a 119 entries to date have made this the most viewed image/page on EPZ ever....and with so many invoved in making it it's kinda fitting really
thanks for letting us play.
would be interesting to see your version after all this Keith.
no problem.......but Oh mY God she can'na take it Boyd...she's gonna blow!!!!!!
Your wife.
![]()
well it's not dirty if like me you work to a wide screen format 90% of the time.
![]()
right...my head hurts.
I have two full days of food shooting...not easy hitting a chick pea with a 9mm, so judging will take place on Friday morning. Feel more than free to upload new and further entries and make the judging even more difficult.
There are few that stand out even now.
G'night you lot.
big file - give you that.....
just see if I can perform the "mcfade" effect and completely ruin it ![]()
But it'll be recognisable of course!!!
![]()
good idea - does the winner get to go take their own RAW next week then?
Yes it was a big file , my poor little computer is having a good cough.
Well I've done 4, not really happy with the BW as I think the shots looks sooo much better in colour but hey ho......were we just supposed to do 1??
cathy
Just tried this at 16-bit. Poor PC was gagging a little ![]()
158 and counting...
Stuck with a dodgy internet connection in an Italian hotel - I don't think I dare try and download the original 8-(
gill
Nice Gesture Mr H. Bloody huge file though.
Regard mine as a kind of 'Friday night fun type entry'.
Brian.
170 entries? hmmm....you got a hell of a job making a choice on Friday : )
Any longer, any more entries and this is gonna be the worlds biggest spot the difference comp !
Good luck Keith.......
Just a quick question........if you took the raw data and say changed a 3 for a 2, what would happen to the image?
James
I quite liked this photo when I first saw it. But to be honest I'm flippin' sick of it now
![]()
just found 6 of them in my computer think its self multiplying and will soon take over....
That lad of mine - the second hand camera salesman from Pontypandy.
g'night
Nearly 200 now. One last push and were there!! Wonder if we could get to 250. Come on everyone! I'm sure the "judge" would like some more to have a look at!!
Keith.
When you upload your version can you do it showing how you achieved the final results?
so that others can compare yours to theirs.
Andy...
Give away trade secrets? I take it you don't want to work for Northscape anymore then Andy.
