Apologies to those that clicked, viewed or commented on Dalbeattie Forest....it just lost SO much impact on upload that I wasn't pleased.

So it's back to Southerness lighthouse and this time a HDR version using three exposures.

Let's see what you think of this one then?

It's not really my thing Mike - it's probably a subject that can take more processing than others, but you've gone quite a long way with it Smile

When you crank up the strength, you start to get halos and you've got the biggy on the horizon - you can use light smoothing on it, but it never quite sorts it out.

I've taken to using Exposure Fusion for HDR now as it seems to find that happy "almost real" look easier than tone mapping.

you using Photomatix?

download the latest version and try Exposure Fusion, it'll change your life Smile

failing that, use Tone Compression and see the difference with that - the foreground will look better

also - do a subtle tone map, then open the middle shot in PS and place the tone map on top as a layer - change blend mode to Luminocity and fade the HDR in and out with the opacity slider - see if that's any good, most of my Leeds stuff was done that way Wink

this is a great image. i do like the hdr process, it is a bit heavy on the hdr but it works fine, but it wont be to every ones taste...

regards john......

Thanks John, I can see from the stats that it's not to everyone's taste. However, I like it and that's probably the most important thing

Out of your last three from this location I like this one the best although I'm not usually a fan of too much HDR, but I think it helps giving impact to those craggy bits in the foreground. Most of all I like the semi-circle of the orangey glow.

what Can I say?
Beautiful scene, lovely composition, but the over cooked HDR effect knocks it back down several pegs.
I suggest you do as Ade suggests and use the exposure fusion settings on the new version of Photomatix the shot will suddenly come alive and look good and very realistic.
