This is possibly one of my best 'first attempts' at time trials photography with my new camera. I used the 'sports' auto facility, so the shutter speed/aperture settings are down to the camera, although I did notice the shutter speeds were around 700-800. It was an evenng event, so the sunlight was decreasing as the event took place. I haven't got a decent zoom lens yet, so I took these at this sat at the side of the road, with the riders passing about 6 feet away, so I had some good panning practice. A lot of the shots missed the lower parts of the wheels, and I adjusted what I was focusing on after realising this.
This should be in the critique gallery, as I need as much critique and feedback as possible to improve on this kind of image
Whipspeed, your comments would be much appreciated - harsh as you like : )

Hey Andrew, certainly not going to be harsh about this, it's a good panning shot & you've filled the frame with the rider on a good part of the course where he's obviously trying hard. Evening light is not easy, I was doing the same yesterday & it was getting darker all the time. I would try standing where you can catch them in a patch of sunshine, rather than shadow, but thats all really. Considering you were only using the 18-55, which can be a good lens & not a sports lens, all I can say is well done Andy.
As for sports setting, try using apeture priority next time, set an ISO of 200-400, a nice wide apeture & shutter speed, set white balance to cloudy to warm things up & you'll have a bit more control.
Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks Sarah and les.
Sarah, that's the kind of thing I need to know re manual settings, thankyou.
I'm riding in an event on saturday, and off quite early, so I shall be able to snap some of the riders later in the start sheet once I've finished. If they're of a decent quality, I post one.
