I must apologize for not being around much lately. I'm having terrible health problems. I also apologize for not commenting too much, I can't really be of much help. i hope my votes mean something though.
I wanted to do something very dramatic on my first self portrait. Maybe to portray a fierce, rugged look, or maybe this is just the way I'm feeling lately. Sorry if is not good enough for portraiture.![]()
Just used one light to bring up a dramatic look and give the skin a more rugged look.
Hope you like it. It's my first one. Critiques welcome and also your modifications.
Enrique

I am no authority whatever on portraiture, but I think you have achieved in this first self portrait what you set out for.......the rather fierce, perhaps intimidating look, the low side lighting and the gaze off camera both contributing to that. The fact that there is no b/g whatever, just your face appearing out of the darkness adds to that end too.
Even as a thumbnail, this is a striking image to my way of thinking.
Others on site who are more versed with this genre of photography will I'm sure offer you a more professional crit.
Sorry to hear of your health problems, Enrique, from which I wish you a speedy and complete recovery.
Regards, Ronnie.
Very dramatic and effective portraiture here. I have uploaded a couple of mods just playing with the colour to effect a slightly different mood. They are not better, just different.
I hope your health issues are resolved soon.
A very dramatic image ...
Everything about this has done what you wanted.
Great tash!!!
Sorry to hear about your health problems . I sincerly hope they will improve.
Thanks everyone for your support, I really appreciate it! ![]()
I love the modification Lynne, especially the way you cropped it. Many thanks again.
Enrique
Self-portraits take courage... I like the strength and resilience in this, it says defiant rather than fierce to me. Maybe that's a response to your problems? I hope that your health improves soon.
Lynne's crop is classically more correct, I guess. But it also reduces the 'Here I stand' impact of central placement.
Moira
Strong and determined in adversity, an intrepid polar explorer in the Shackleton mould. So the monochrome and the steady gaze are essential; the single light-source ditto.
Excellent tones, detail and mono conversion.
Sorry to hear about the ill-health: getting over the problems is more important than commenting on our photographs!
Bill
Outstanding self-portrait.
I like the Tones, lighting and expression.
Hope you start to feel better soon.

oh ... and dont' worry about the comments; i'm personally not too bothered about either votes or comments. it's nice to get them and they are very welcome but it's just as ok not to get anything - most important is to enjoy what you doing, i think!
Hope you get well soon!
Great self-portrait !!....brave fella' !!!........lovely dramatic lighting to accentuate the 'mood' !!
The only thing that I would add to the previous comments is to add some catch-lights to the eyes !, particularly your
left eye, which is a black disc....& catchlights would really give the shot a touch more 'oomph' ?????

Thanks Keith and everyone. Fact is I don't even know the vocabulary yet, like the types of lights. Honestly, I need to get more info on lights, but you are right. I can see the problem with the eyes. I will try again when I get more lights and know more about it.
Thanks for all the feedback!
Enrique
An excellent self portrait Enrique, I hope your health improves, all the best, Ed
