The Eruption at the beginning of April on Fimmvruhls, Iceland. I've been going to Iceland for five years to photograph, I couldn't resist another trip when this thing blew, and it was the experience of a lifetime - I stayed on top of the pass for four days, saw Northern Lights above the flickering flames, sat out a ridiculous 48 hour hurricane storm, and was given a snickers bar by James May of the Top Gear team when they found me alone on top of the mountain, when everyone else had retreated down for safety...

Wow, to say I'm jealous is an understatement! You've managed to capture the very essence of Iceland for me in this shot!

Went last year, and going again later this year for my honeymoon...really can't wait - especially seeing shots like this!

A wonderful image, looks like mother nature was having a bit of a disco that night! I was lucky enoughto stay near the volcano in early April whilst on a school geography trip and saw the northern light for the first time. I must go back one day.

Saw the episode of Top Gear on Sunday where James May drove up to the edge of the volcano mouth and remembered this shot. Also saw the shot today in the 'Metro' newspaper.

Didn't know you read French newspapers Paul Wink

Still a very neat shot, but thinking on, perhaps the burnt out bit of flame in the centre could have been controlled by waving something between it and the camera during the exposure. Something a bit like dodging used to be on film printing. A Snickers bar wrapper held in the hand would have done Wink

Anyway, congratulations on getting well published Grin

Goggz, apologies for the long delay - I used a number of things, as you point out, to attempt this, but the sad fact is that over the long exposure something as bright as a volcano is going to blow out, and since I hate HDR and the whole concept of using multiple photographs, I was left with this - I used my finger, a rock, a bag strap, all of these things to hold the exposure back in the relevant sections, but to no avail - every attempt had different results, but the general trend was continual blow-out of the highlights.

Sometimes we have to accept that a compromise is necessary. Considering the amount of income and attention these shots have got me, I think it was an acceptable compromise!!!

I have to agree James. Just how many of us would have taken a photo as good as this under the same circumstances (in sub zero temepratures no doubt). A great effort and 200 views is a testament to this.

HDR? mmm I've yet to have a go and I'm a firm believer that cameras have to improve so we don't have to use HDR, it seems an awful lot of work and to get the detail you want in all areas. Shoudn't cameras have a high contrast setting to deal with difficult exposures without the use of photomatrix and stacking images!!! Yep I'm on your side on this one!

Apologies for the long delay James, no problemo - glad you already knew the tricks and I still think this is a fab image.

Maybe the moral of the story is not to eat all the lollipops before you get there Wink
