The Amanita Muscaria, perhaps the most beautiful of all mushrooms! Great photo. Captures the time of year when they come up, in the Fall. Closely related to the Amanita Verna (teh Death Cap--all white) and toxic but not fatal to eat. Thought of have some psychoactive properties, and speculated by some that Plato ate these (as part of the ritual of a Mystery Cult) that led to his writing the Allegory of the Cave, at the conceptual center of his Republic. I used to live in Upstate New York, and they would be all over the place, in the woods, in September-October. They ranged, where I was from yellow to orange to red.

Thanks for the info and vote Peter, they only occur in red in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK.

Great use of light. Really brings out the colour.
