It's an unoriginal title but my reason for putting him/her on here was to ask what am I doing wrong? It just doesn't have the detail I would like. This was taken yesterday evening. Is the lense, the lighting, or just me and the way I take the picture. It is jpeg. Any help would be gratefully received!!

Macro photography is a black art that I have yet to perfect, though I keep trying. The fact that you captured the Hoverfly at all is success in itself. Having a specialist macro lens and a ring flash helps, but then you have to deal with very limited depth of field. There are useful tutorials on this site here:-

My only advice is read, practice and be kind to yourself about the results. I reckon if I get 1/10 half decent macro shots I am doing extremely well.
Well done for trying.
A rather nice image capturing this charming Honey Bee going about his business.

Thank you all for your comments and suggested sites to visit. I've had a look and need to read them again to let it sink in. It's been a great help.
