For Holocaust Memorial Day. This is the Memorial to the Martyrs of Deportation, for the 200,000 French citizens who were deported to Nazi extermination camps, many with the collaboration of the Vichy government.
The Memorial lies at the eastern tip of the Île de la Cité, Paris, in a corner of the little park behind Notre Dame Cathedral.
It takes the form of a crypt. Steep steps lead down to a courtyard, set within concrete walls, with one barred window showing onto the water (see V2). You then enter an outer chamber with inscriptions for the various camps, and look into a barred inner chamber, where 200,000 fragments of glass reflect the light of an eternal flame. And then nothing, a dead end.
I would urge anyone visiting Paris to visit this place. It was created in 1962 and I still remember the commotion in the French media; it was part of a move to persuade French society to acknowledge the part played by their own countrymen in the Holocaust, and a lot of people didn't want to know.
Entry is free but restricted to a few people at a time, photography is allowed but no flash or tripod.
The title of the upload is the inscription over the door.
Thanks for looking, and for reading,
Moira

I will definitely make the pilgrimage the next time I'm in Paris. It looks a wonderful monument to a time of unbelievable horror.

I've shown the Map location, and the monument is marked. It's very discreet at ground level, you have to follow the edge of the garden to find it.

V2 looks very sinister, but V1 has an almost inviting appearance. Thanks for bringing this historical site to our attention.

The line between sanity and insanity is very fine indeed, the line between civilised and Barbaric is also very fine, politics and dictators go hand in hand, they think up legitimate excuses to kill others that get in their way!, Iraq was one example, until the ordinary people say no more! it will go on! the next war is on the drawing board, Prime Ministers cheat and lie through their teeth to meet their own ends!. We are helping our French comrades at the moment, none of our troops will be on the ground, now they are in an advisory capacity! with bullet proof vests and GUNS! and so it goes on! lest we forget! people have very short memories when it suits them!. My son in law not long Back from Afghanistan lost his best friend at his side! it was his second tour! yes they call it a tour! some one should have shot the tour operator! not the poor sod's that do the killing for them. Hypocrisy is alive and well and living in Parliament where it will not get hurt!, regards Leon.
