Ive only ever dabbled in portraits but I got a speedlite softbox and a couple of cheap brollies for Xmas so I thought I would have a practice on Fred.
Any Thoughts good or bad are more than welcome![]()

I would think that a vertical frame would suit it better, looks too tight for me...
Flash made his nose and cheeks shine but not his eyes.
Yet all the age lines are well recorded.
The picture represents him thoughtful or in a sad noment.
but the important thing is : "Did he like the picture?" that's all it matters.

Thank You Pablo
Yes I see your points about the framing and agree.
The softbox gave him huge square catchlights in his eyes which I cloned out as I found them to much.
Fred is the Father in Law and I took this Christmas day so he may well have been a little sad at my cooking!!, or half pi##ed to be fair as he likes a tipple![]()
I did process it that evening and yes he did like like it...He may well have been just saying it though....I shall ask him for a proper shoot where I can set up better with more space and more time.
This has the makings of a nice shot Paul, - and I know because I downloaded it and fixed a couple of issues. He has a great face, full of character.
The eyes, - which are critical to have catchlights, likely did need the large squares cloned, BUT after you do this, you can replace them by painting with a 3 or 4 pixel soft white brush, at 100%, on a layer, and reduce opacity if its needed. Looks way better than black.
Next, - the image is very underexposed, and thats got to do with the metering mode and shooting mode. Dont use spot, - use evaluative, centre weighted; metering will be taken out of the equation next in manual mode; use MANUAL mode. Dial in the max flash synch speed (1/200 or 1/250), and then use the aperture to control the amount of light; if the aperture doesnt get it done, then you either adjust flash power, or move the lights closer of further away.
In Av mode, Canon will use the flash as a fill only flash, using the ambient light first. What you want is full light control in manual mode for a portrait.
I can mail the mod to you if you like, Im at wbaneham@gmail.com.
regards
Willie
