Mary the background isn't 'blotchy'.
The robin sharp and the b/g defocused is exactly want you want!
This was achieved with the wide aperture you used.
The robin is perfected placed and facing into the image,
so you're getting it all right!

Great image.
The bokeh is OK and the subject and bg are well separated (focal length and aperture saw to that).
